Q: Since the universe cannot logically be infinite (infinite regress), is it not logical that God can also not be infinite?
A: This very good question does indeed rule out a concept of God who is “infinite” as the English word is defined. But, rather than described as “infinite,” the God of the Bible is described as “eternal.”
“The Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King.” – Jeremiah 10:10
As I sat in my Astronomy class one day in college, I remember my professor making the following statement:
“Eternity has nothing to do with time; eternity has everything to do with existence.”
“Infinite” and “eternal” have different nuances, with “infinite” being associated with time, and “eternal” being associated with existence.
In Genesis 1, the Bible says God created time. Yet, he is timeless.
Brain cramping yet? Because it gets even more unimaginable.
As author, Philip Yancey, observed in his, “The Jesus I Never Knew”,
“The God who created matter took shape within it, as an artist might become a spot on a painting or a playwright a character within his own play.”
That “character” is Jesus Christ.
“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” – Deuteronomy 33:27
