“After all I’ve done, Jesus could never save me.”
In his book, Is God Real?, Lee Strobel shares the following story of the electrifying motorcyclist and entertainer, Evel Kneivel:
“The daredevil motorcyclist Evel Knievel, a womanizer and drunkard who once went to prison for beating up a business partner with a baseball bat, was on the beach in Florida when he felt God ‘speak’ to him on the inside: ‘Robert, I’ve saved you more times than you’ll ever know. Now I need you to come to me through my Son Jesus.”
Knievel was stunned! He sought out a book on the historical evidence for Jesus and ended up experiencing a radical conversion to Christ. When he told his story at his baptism, seven hundred people responded by receiving Jesus as their forgiver and leader.
Knievel died about a year later, and at his request his tombstone is etched with the words “Believe in Jesus Christ.”
Oh, my friends, there remains no sin on planet earth that can stand against the power of the Cross and the Empty Tomb!
The 19th century British preacher, Charles Spurgeon, once said,
“God can reach into the gutter and pull out a jewel!”
Using metaphorical imagery, Jesus told his listeners,
“I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again.
Nathanael was a hardened skeptic who would eventually come to be one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. When his brother, Philip, came to tell him about Jesus, Nathanael replied derisively,
“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip simply answered,
“Come and see.”
Jesus never imposed himself on anyone. He gives us the freedom to trust him or reject him.
I echo what Philip said to Nathanael, “Come and see.” Investigate the claims of Jesus. Then decide for yourself.
Give your life to Jesus today. Trust him. His love for you is beyond human comprehension. Experience the joy and freedom of the Risen Christ.
