People my age will most likely remember the 70’s song by B.J. Thomas with the above title. (link to the song is below)
Presently, we’re diving deep into the Scriptures in the BHBC College Ministry to see how the Bible answers the question: “What is heaven?”
We began by simply being introduced to this beloved doctrine. Do you, as a believer, ever feel a longing for “something/somewhere beyond” what you can see? Do you ever wonder why tales of kings and kingdoms so connect with us emotionally?
There’s a biblical reason for that.
Solomon wrote that God “has put eternity into man’s heart.” (Ecc. 3:11) Translation: we’re hardwired with “hope” for heaven.
What follows are two wonderful quotes by C.S. Lewis on this “longing” for heaven:
From “The Screwtape Letters” (The senior demon, Screwtape, counseling his apprentice demon, Wormwood): “My dear Wormwood,…The truth is the Enemy (God), having oddly destined these mere animals (Christians) to life in His own eternal world, has guarded them pretty effectively from the danger of feeling at home anywhere else.”
From “Mere Christianity”: “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”
Soli Deo Gloria, Nick
